KANTA

Traditional a cappella song

Kan ‘ta means ‘Sing then !’ in the Breton language and reflects how these three women came to sing together. Katell and Gladez were brought up surrounded by traditional music and their mother passed on a multilingual repertoire in Welsh, French, English and Breton. This transmission happened at home, in friendly settings, in pubs and festivals across the Celtic countries. Both Katell and Gladez enjoy singing and playing around with harmonies while Brigitte sings a steady melody.

Brigitte and Katell have been singing together for more than 25 years. Gladez joined them a few years later. Kanta started performing while carrying on singing in informal settings. In 2005, having sung together regularly for a few years, they recorded about 30 songs which resulted in two albums: Midwinter Carols & Home Away from Home, reflecting the trio’s interest in calendar songs and diversity.
